The template trap: why your site looks like everyone else's
Drag-and-drop templates feel like a bargain until you realize they're working against you. Here's the real cost of a site that looks like a thousand others.

You’ve seen the ads: a beautiful website in an afternoon, no code, drag and drop, fifteen dollars a month. It’s a tempting offer, and for a weekend project it’s fine. For a business you’re trying to grow, it’s a quiet liability.
The sameness problem
Templates are designed to work for everyone, which means they’re designed for no one in particular. The same hero image, the same three-column features, the same rounded buttons appear on tens of thousands of sites. Your customers can’t put their finger on it, but they feel it: this looks like every other site. And “every other site” is not how you stand out in a crowded market.
Your business has something specific that makes people choose you. A template, by definition, can’t know what that is.
The hidden weight
Drag-and-drop builders achieve their flexibility by loading enormous amounts of code so that any arrangement is possible. You pay for that flexibility in load time, the exact thing we keep harping on because it costs you customers and rankings.
A custom-built site loads only what your site actually uses. It’s the difference between a tailored jacket and one with every possible pocket sewn in just in case.
The rent you never stop paying
The fifteen dollars a month never ends, and it rarely stays fifteen. Worse, your site lives inside someone else’s platform. You don’t own it. If they change their pricing, their terms, or their business, your site is along for the ride.
What “custom” really buys you
It isn’t about being fancy. It’s about a site that:
- Looks like your business, not a category.
- Loads fast because it carries no dead weight.
- Is built around the one or two things you actually want visitors to do.
- Is yours, code you own, with no monthly rent on your own front door.
A template makes you look like you exist. A custom site makes you look like the obvious choice. For most businesses, the gap between those two is the whole point of having a website at all.
